The word uniform literally translates to “one form,” or as AG likes to imagine it, as a coming together. Throughout history, the uniform was worn to denote factions—groups of people who shared a common cause, a utility, or duty. We think of military garb, the workman’s heavy-duty cotton canvas, or the miner’s reinforced denim pant. Fast-forward to the 60s and we see those same uniforms being stripped of their original reflections of conformity and deftly re-appropriated as political statements— as reclamations of freedom, youth, and unity. This is where AG’s Spring 2020 Collection draws its intention for “Society in Uniform” and reimagines the essence of military, workwear, and vintage garments for modern application.
Referencing the origins of army attire, our first delivery of “Society in Uniform” rings in the familiar with watercolor camouflage, shades of olive drab, and rooty nudes. But where you begin to feel comfortable in the nostalgia of an Earth-tone palette, you see smartly reimagined silhouettes and added pops of muted red and blanched pink that intimate the spirit of counterculture and young rebellion. The washes of color blend into one another seamlessly, creating the illusion of a march en masse, adorned in army surplus.
Spring sees some of our newest fabric exclusives with lightweight cottons, lyocell ribbing, and ultra-soft terry. For the women, a new baby tee silhouette rings in the season with a 90s throwback. Developed in Lofty Cotton Jersey, a 100% cotton jersey knitted with S and Z twist threads, the Del Rey Baby Tee is a cropped t-shirt for women to pair back with the new assortment of high waisted pants. On the men’s side, this new fabrication is seen in classics like the Bryce Crew and brand new silhouettes like the Clyde Short Sleeve Henley. Designed with a contrast poplin placket and scratch enamel hardware, this henley for men revisits the vintage quality of well-worn military uniforms. Beyond basic knitwear, the first drop of our spring collection also sees 100% organic cotton fabric like Passage Carded Poplin. Available for women in a new Justine Military Dress and the Sian Pullover Shirt, watercolor camo and vintage surplus greens create a transitional canvas that pulls right into the fall season. This fabric even updates the men’s assortment in the Foster Short Sleeve Shirt, a modern take on the camp collar shirt with a boxier fit and wide sleeves.
Some of our most dramatic styles enter our collection in women’s bottoms. The Chrissy Short, available in bright spring colors in our Japanese Dover Stretch Denim, is a barracuda hem short for women with an innovative sulfur treatment. The Adele Pleated women’s Trouser offers sophisticated pleats and side slit leg openings that borrows from the tailored military pant. Also inspired by the men’s military cargo pant is the Troi Cargo Shorts for women, complete with an effortlessly low-slung fit. For those looking for a statement-making one-piece, the new Emery Jumpsuit carries a timeless aesthetic with novelty details like an unexpected mandarin collar and dropped shoulders. To add even more drama, discover the Hadley High Rise Pleated Culotte pants. It’s custom fitted with a high waist, wrap around pleats, and enamel buttons for a modern vintage look. For a more classic approach, try the Faye mid rise cigarette pant, updated in Superior Stretch Twill for a day-to-night look. The new Faye has the same perfect rise but is updated with side slits and a fresh new assortment of spring colors.
For the men’s bottoms, military-inspired themes infiltrate the collection with fabrics, silhouettes, and prints. The new Turney Utility Loose Crop comes with utilitarian detailing in a contemporary silhouette. Offered in new overdye colorways like neutral, washed-down tones with sulfur treatment. Another brand new fit for men is the Solomon Slouchy Tapered Cropped Pant, intended for the fashion-forward man who wants a versatile crop that fits relaxed but looks tailored. The Clyfton Fatigue Relaxed Tapered Pants for men is still cut with the same relaxed upper block that made this fit so popular. Added vintage military details make this style an essential for the fashionable man’s wardrobe, complete with corduroy-lined waistbanding. In a new fabrication, the Stretch Ripstop, the Clyfton Utility Short is for the relaxed but tapered pant wearer. Finished with a new Sulfur X treatment that creates a contrasted, washed-down aged effect.
