Stony Hill

Stony Hill Vineyard is a historic Napa Valley estate founded by Fred and Eleanor McCrea in the early 1940s. They purchased a former goat ranch on the rocky northeast slopes of Spring Mountain in 1943 and planted their first vines—Riesling, Pinot Blanc and Chardonnay—in 1947. The winery building went up in 1951, and their inaugural vintage was released in 1952. For decades Stony Hill was known almost exclusively for its white wines, especially Chardonnay and Riesling, crafted in a restrained, terroir-driven style with minimal oak. Eventually, in the 2000s they planted Cabernet Sauvignon, with their first red wine release in 2009. Now, Stony Hill is owned by Lawrence Wine Estates, under Carlton McCoy.

Carlton McCoy is a distinguished master sommelier and wine executive, best known as the CEO and managing partner of Lawrence Wine Estates. Raised in Washington, D.C., McCoy developed an early love of food through his grandmother’s catering work. He earned a scholarship to the Culinary Institute of America, where a wine class helped shift his trajectory toward oenology.

In 2013, at just 28 years old, McCoy passed the Court of Master Sommeliers exam, becoming one of the youngest and the second African American to achieve that rank. Before taking the helm of wineries, he served as wine director at The Little Nell in Aspen, where he cultivated a reputation for sophistication, deep wine knowledge, and hospitality leadership.

"I think often we have the desire to learn things quickly. With wine, that's impossible — It's really a journey. Taste as often as possible, and learn what you love."

McCoy’s vision for Lawrence Wine Estates emphasizes honoring historic terroirs, sustainable and biodynamic farming, and elevating brand identity across estates while preserving each winery’s uniqueness. He is also a strong advocate for diversity in the wine industry as co-founder of The Roots Fund, which provides mentorship, educational support, and opportunities for people of color pursuing careers in wine.
