The California Edit: Nick Pourfard

Meet Nick Pourfard, a California designer crafting furniture and lighting. His sustainable design and hands-on craftsmanship embody the timeless spirit of AG.

AG is proud to introduce California Edit—a new editorial series spotlighting California-based voices whose personal journeys intersect with creativity and culture. Through this series, we celebrate stories rooted in craftsmanship, sustainability, and timeless design. We begin with designer Nick Pourfard, whose work captures the essence of California’s landscape in both form and spirit.

Nick Pourfard is a California-based light and furniture designer who blends hands-on craft with minimalism. After gaining recognition as the self-taught founder of Prisma Guitars—creating instruments from recycled skateboard decks—he expanded into furniture and lighting. Rooted in Southern California, his work favors simple construction, raw materials, and everyday utility, often expressed through ceramic, glass, wood, and metal. From his Escondido home and studio, where he’s restoring a modernist Walter S. White house and tending to his garden, Nick merges space, material, and memory into objects that quietly reflect the world around him.

On California’s impact:

“I grew up outdoors—among strawberry fields and horses. That connection to the land gave me a deep attachment to my surroundings and naturally shaped my perspective on design.”

For this project, Nick created a one-of-a-kind dining table inspired by the fleeting beauty of a cactus flower. Crafted with handmade wooden petals, the piece is a meditation on temporality, attention, and transformation.

“Cacti bloom only once or twice a year, and sometimes the flowers last only a few hours,” he shares. “It’s a rare and beautiful moment that deserves celebration. I thought—what if this table could be a forever flower?”

The gesture transforms the everyday into something sacred. By capturing the stillness of a desert bloom, the table invites viewers to pause, witness, and reflect—a piece rooted in California’s wild beauty, thoughtful design, and reverence for the unseen rhythms of nature.

Nick’s path to design has been shaped by the same qualities he finds in nature: openness, resilience, and transformation.

“As a kid, I was always chasing new things to learn—music, drawing, building. Skateboarding played a huge role. One spot could be seen so differently by each person, and that freedom to reinterpret has always inspired me.”

On beginning with guitars:

“I found the strict functional demands limiting. A serious shop accident left me unable to work for a while, but it also pushed me to look inward and double down on design as personal expression.”

For Nick, sustainability is less a strategy than a mindset.

“I do my best not to be wasteful and am always looking for ways to make my process gentler on the world.”

Through his flower-like table, Nick invites us not only to observe California’s natural beauty, but to live within its cycles of growth and change. His work embodies what California Edit seeks to honor—and what AG has always stood for: creativity rooted in place, mindful craftsmanship, and timeless style.
