The word uniform literally translates to “one form,” or as AG likes to imagine it, as a coming together. Throughout history, the uniform was worn to denote factions—groups of people who shared a common cause, a utility, or duty. We think of military garb, the workman’s heavy-duty cotton canvas, or the miner’s reinforced denim pant. Fast-forward to the 60s and we see those same uniforms being stripped of their original reflections of conformity and deftly re-appropriated as political statements— as reclamations of freedom, youth, and unity. This is where AG’s Spring 2020 Collection draws its intention for “Society in Uniform” and reimagines the essence of military, workwear, and vintage garments for modern application.
Referencing the origins of army attire, delivery 1 of “Society in Uniform” rings in the familiar with watercolor camouflage, shades of olive drab, and rooty nudes. But where you begin to feel comfortable in the nostalgia of an Earth-tone palette, you see smartly reimagined silhouettes and added pops of muted red and blanched pink that intimate the spirit of counterculture and young rebellion. The washes of color blend into one another seamlessly, creating the illusion of a march en masse, adorned in army surplus.
Spring sees some of our most standout dyes in a blended array of warm-weather hues. A newly-developed worn copper red is rooted in the heritage of industrial America, reflecting a soft yet aged quality that marries the hardiness of workwear with the warmth of spring. Find this reddish tone in the sophisticated Jamison Slim Tailored Trouser, the Tellis Modern Slim for men, and the men’s Bryce Crew, treated with worn-in sulfur finishes. For women, a rosey crop top designed in the Kyaryo short sleeve wrap top is the perfect finish paired with a mid or high-rise jean. Slightly lighter than Worn Copper but definitely just as vibrant is a fresh take on muted mauve. Almond Butter is a creamy infusion of pale rose, toasted beige, and earthy cacao. As seen in an apricot colored maxi dress, the Micah Dress, is a dreamy t-shirt dress complete with side seam pockets and a comfy oversized silhouette.
Stripes, a truly American vintage aesthetic, makes a big leap in the Spring 2020 Collection with tri-colored pieces. The Del Rey baby tee for women features the honey hue, Baked Morel nude and a classic army-inspired colorway of Notting Vine green. Military tones make a breakthrough statement in an exclusive watercolor camo design in Dried Grass. Featured in the new Adel pleated Trouser for women, the iconic Dart Jacket for men, and the brand new Zoey Muscle Tank with larger cut out arm openings. A distant cousin of our favorite military greens is Portobello Road, a rustic moss green with a hint of earth tones. The men’s Clyde short sleeve henley makes for a great basic with just a subtle difference from your typical black and white knits. To pair back to the same color family, we adopted Sandy Pail and Parched Trail to represent the desert military khaki. For women, a 2-in-1 Justine Dress doubles as a long sleeve dress and can be worn as a light jacket. For men, a lighter colored Griffin Short is represented in a desert sand hue. Our most promising colorway of the season is a fusion of nude and pale pink, Light Shiitake, and its slightly deeper tone, Dark Shiitake. This updated version of millennial pink is a steady unisex color that displays a fresh yet refined hue on anything it lands on. On a lightweight poplin shirt for men like The Foster Shirt, the light pink tone pairs nostalgically back to the retro-inspired camp collar silhouette. This new color takes a feminine tone in a softer than soft vintage sweatshirt for women, complete with a relaxed silhouette, raglan sleeves, and shrunken sleeves. On the AG-exclusive terry, this muted nude pink carries a color-rich finish and a lightweight feel.
